Latin American Rhythms night

from Shawn Choi

Latin American Rhythms Night, August 19th at 7pm on FTH FB Live will celebrate the life and music of Diego Obregon, master Colombian musician and marimba maker; and will reunite NY’s leading Colombian musicians in tribute to him. An Afro-Colombian immigrant artist with incredible talent and a generous spirit, Diego helped establish NYC’s Colombian music scene, fronting his own band Grupo Chonta, mentoring the next generation of musicians, and sitting in with musicians from around the world---all while working in a NYC graveyard to support his family. Diego died suddenly in July 2020. His friends, colleagues and bandmates will remember him with a night of music and stories. Hosted and curated by Martin Vejarano (director of La Cumbiamba NY, NYC Gaita Club, and Cumbia River Band), this evening will feature: Grupo Rebolú's Ronald Polo, Moris Cañate, Johanna Castaneda and special guest Harold Gutierrez on Diego’s marimba; Pablo Major (Folklore Urbano) on piano; Sebastián Cruz on guitar; NYC Gaita Club featuring: Christian Rodriguez, Camilo Martinez, and Cristian Quimnay; and with remembrances of Freddy Castiblanco of Terraza 7 and more. This evening is dedicated to Diego and viewers are invited to help his family at this time. https://www.gofundme.com/f/a-el-maestro-diego-obregon (from )
