Season Of Light Celebration: A Cross-Cultural Winter Festival

from Dani Fazio

One Tree Wholistic Learning Center invites the public to join in celebrating cultural holiday traditions at their 3rd annual Season of Light Celebration. This free event is on Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00pm and is located at CIEE, 300 Fore Street, Portland.

This afternoon of family fun includes storytelling, arts and crafts, music, food, and a presentation of six cultural holidays—each incorporates the symbolism of light: Eid and Ramadan (Muslim), Christmas (Christianity), Kwanzaa (African heritage), Hanukkah (Judaism), Diwali (Hindu), and Winter Solstice. There will be a silent auction featuring a variety of products and gift certificates from local businesses, which will help raise critical funds for this non-profit organization.

One Tree promotes social change within institutions and communities through education and grassroots community organizing rooted in peace, pluralism, and partnership. One Tree operates the Roots and Fruits cross-cultural preschool in South Portland, as well as the Community Branches Project and Seeds Institute. Guests at the Season of Light Celebration will learn more about each program and engage with its mission to promote cultural partnerships and work towards social justice. The preschool students will present art projects they have worked on this fall. This unique event draws guests from diverse cultural communities and encourages people to share their heritage, stories, traditions, and ideas. (from )
