North to Alaska (For Literacy)

from Eventbrite

Day 1: The trip will start in Anchorage. People will arrive on their own since they can come from many places. We will include a night at the Comfort Inn Ships Creek which provides shuttle from the airport and to the depot. We will take advantage of this night to take in a Broadway play. Broadway in Anchorage presents Broadway plays all summer. I don't know what play we will see because I don't know what the 2014 schedule will be, but this summer, the plays are Westside Story, Memphis, and the Addams Family. Day 2: The next morning, we will board the Glacier Discovery Train to Whittier, arrive in Whittier at 12:45 where we board the 26 Glacier Cruise. Yes, I said 26 glaciers, and we need to see them before they melt away. LOL After the cruise, we board the train back to Anchorage and spend the night at the Comfort Inn. Day 3: We take the Denali Star Train from Anchorage to Denali. We spend the night in Denali. Along the way, we will see spectacular scenery that is only viewable along the rail tracks. Day 4: We experience the Tundra in Denali National Park with a guided tour.  Then we board the train for Fairbanks. Day 5:-6: In Fairbanks, we go on the Riverboat Discovery tour in the morning, and the afternoon, we explore Fairbanks. That evening, we take a plane to the Arctic Circle and learn the story of Alaska's Arctic. We spend the night in Fairbanks and depart by Alaska Airlines to Anchorage. I've tried to put in as many things as people have said they want from the Alaska experience. Alaska is such a big state that multiple trips would be reasonable in order to experience all of the sights. But, this is a good start. The trip will include lunches on the train and in many of the excursions. Dinner will be the responsibility of the individual. I'm working on pricing now, but it looks like we can do this for under $2,500. Some people said they wanted to go Halibut fishing, but since that is a specialty activity and some people would not be interested, then those who want to fish can extend their trip a couple of days and make private arrangements for your fishing trip. Literacy Volunteers will work out a monthly payment for those who want this option. It will certainly make it easier to afford this event. If you want to go, plan to put a $500 deposit on the trip by Oct. 1. I will sent you the exact price and the payment terms this week. (from )
