National Grid Earth Day Celebration

from Emily MT

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College commemorates Earth Day with its eighth annual National Grid Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 3pm. This interactive family event will take place on the plaza outside the Whitman Theatre at Brooklyn College, immediately following the 2pm presentation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle Favourites. Brooklyn Center’s eighth annual National Grid Earth Day Celebration is free and open to the public, with no tickets or reservations required. Tickets to The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle Favourites are $9 and can be purchased at BrooklynCenter.org or by calling the box office at 718-951-4500 (Tue-Sat, 1pm-6pm). Both the performance and the Earth Day Celebration are recommended for ages three and up. The event is sponsored by National Grid.

Now in its eighth year, the National Grid Earth Day Celebration is designed to educate families on how they can play a role in caring for the Earth and creating a more sustainable future. Interactive family activities, educational materials, and give-away items will highlight the need for conserving energy, recycling in the home, and having a heightened awareness of the environmental and global issues that we face today.

“Earth Day is one of the signature events for National Grid’s Power to Serve employee volunteer effort to help make our communities greener and cleaner for our customers,” said Ken Daly, President, National Grid New York. “National Grid has a strong history of employee volunteerism and community service. Our strong partnership with Brooklyn Center is an opportunity for our employees to help educate families – especially young children – about how to be responsible citizens and stewards of the environment.”

This year’s Earth Day Celebration will feature hands-on activities for all ages that will allow attendees to learn about how to take action in helping our planet. Returning favorites include the New York City Fire Department’s fire prevention demonstration, a workshop by Bash the Trash to build your own musical instrument from recycled and reused materials, puppeteer Ronny Wasserstrom and his collection of unique marionettes, and the bright sounds of Nydia Mata’s steel drums. Other activities will include yoga for kids, workshops and activities on reusing and repurposing household goods, and interactive storytellers.
