Intro to Black and White Photography with Tricia Rosenkilde

from Erica Criss

The magic of film based photography! Re-inspire your photography by learning about the joy of hands-on film photography.

This workshop will offer an in-depth introduction to the transformative process of shooting and developing 35mm & Medium Format film and printing your own images in the traditional darkroom. The understanding of camera and creative controls you will gain by working with film can be equally utilized for digital photography as you become a better photographer. This workshop will open a window onto the satisfactions and beauty of hand crafted photography.

Students will learn how to use their camera settings such as aperture and shutter speed to have creative control, about good composition, about shooting with available light, as well as how to load and process film, make contact sheets and produce aesthetically pleasing final prints in the darkroom. We will be shooting part of the time outdoors on the street or nearby park. Participants will also learn about how to evaluate negatives, understand exposure and contrast control and the use of filters and other tools.

Students can also learn how to scan their film negatives onto a computer if they want to work digitally with their images later on. Students will finish the workshop with greater appreciation for working with film, prints to be proud of and the experience for continuing on their own in the future.

Students of every level are welcome from beginner to advanced.
