Fairfield University vs. Loyola Maryland added to Barclays BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival

from Diego Isio

The Fairfield University men’s basketball team will play Loyola University Maryland at Barclays Center on Sunday, December 28, at 5 p.m., joining the field for the BROOKLYN HOOPS™ Winter Festival Presented by HONDA. The game was originally scheduled as a home game for Fairfield University.

Along with the Stags vs. Greyhounds match up, the Festival field also includes games between St. John’s University and Tulane University, as well as Hofstra University and LIU Brooklyn. This game will mark the first time that Fairfield University will play a game at Barclays Center.

“We have a great alumni base in New York, and I know they'll be excited about the opportunity to watch the Stags play at Barclays Center, one of the premiere venues for basketball in the country," Fairfield Director of Athletics Gene Doris said.

“In my three seasons at Fairfield, our players have experienced a basketball journey second to none,” said Head Coach Sydney Johnson. “We've played in the post season two out of the last three seasons, hosted the defending national champion (Louisville) in our own state, traveled to Italy on a summer tour and this season we're scheduled to play at Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Clearly playing in New York City at Barclays Center adds to the list of standout experiences for our players and basketball program.”

Fairfield and Loyola will continue their series with this game as the two schools will meet for the 57th time with the Stags holding a 36-20 advantage in the series. The two teams met for the first time during the 1977-78 campaign which Fairfield won by a 100-89 margin. The Greyhounds posted a 59-52 victory in last year’s meeting which took place in Baltimore.

The Stags begin their fourth season under Coach Johnson, who led the Stags to postseason play twice in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Greyhounds will play their second season under G.G. Smith, who led Loyola through its first season in the Patriot League during the 2013-14 campaign.
